In 1945, after the Second World War, the American army established a large temporary prisoner of war camp, one of the so-called "Rheinwiesen", in the triangle between Güdderath, Hochneukirch and Wickrathberg. From April to September 1945, between 100,000 and 150,000 German soldiers were interned here, under the open sky.
