A Stolperstein literally "stumbling stone", metaphorically a "stumbling block" is a sett-size, 10 by 10 centimetres (3.9 in × 3.9 in) concrete cube bearing a brass plate inscribed with the name and life dates of victims of Nazi extermination or persecution.

The Stolpersteine project, initiated by the German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992, aims to commemorate individuals at exactly the last place of residency—or, sometimes, work—which was freely chosen by the person before he or she fell victim to Nazi terror, euthanasia, eugenics, was deported to a concentration or extermination camp, or escaped persecution by emigration or suicide. As of 29 March 2018, over 67,000 Stolpersteine have been laid in 22 countries, making the Stolpersteine project the world's largest decentralized memorial.

The majority of Stolpersteine commemorate Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Others have been placed for Sinti and Romani people (then also called "gypsies"), homosexuals, the physically or mentally disabled, Jehovah's Witnesses, black people, members of the Communist Party, the Social Democratic Party, and the anti-Nazi Resistance, the Christian opposition (both Protestants and Catholics), and Freemasons, along with International Brigade soldiers in the Spanish Civil War, military deserters, conscientious objectors, escape helpers, capitulators, "habitual criminals", looters, and others charged with treason, military disobedience, or undermining the Nazi military, as well as Allied soldiers.

Gennep, 7 July 1885 – Extern kommando Ludwigsdorf, 6 March 1943. Reached the age of 57 years. Occupation: Cattle dealer.

Aschendorf, 1 August 1893 – Auschwitz, 31 August 1942. Reached the age of 49 years.

Gelsenkirchen, 20 October 1909 – Buchenwald, 29 March 1945. Reached the age of 35 years. Occupation: LTC employee.

Gennep, 13 September 1879 – Sobibor, 14 May 1943.  Reached the age of 63 years.

Gennep, 11 March 1876 – Sobibor, 14 May 1943.  Reached the age of 67 years.

Gennep, 19 January 1890 – Auschwitz, 31 August 1942. Reached the age of 52 years. Occupation: LTC aid.

The 3 sisters Bock, Josephina, Bertha and Hedwig were born in Gennep and returned there in the early 1930s. Their brother Max had a butcher's shop in Gennep.  Hedwig was the first to go on the 9 April transport, August 25, 1942, together with 5 other Gennepenians Josephina and Bertha.

Neckarbischofsheim, 12 February 1861 – Sobibor, 14 May 1943. Reached the age of 82 years. 

Father of Julchen, Abraham Jacobsohn, he lived with his daughter and family.

Neckarbischofsheim, 4 December 1899 – Sobibor, 11 June 1943. Reached the age of 43 years.

Gennep, 1 July 1932 – Sobibor, 11 June 1943. Reached the age of 10 years.

Selly Friedel Andriesse was deported to Sobibor in June 1943 from Vught via Westerbork on the so-called children's transport.

Gennep, 1 June 1897 – Sobibor, 16 July 1943. Reached the age of 46 years. Occupation: Cattle dealer.

Harry married Julchen Jakobsohn in 1930. She was originally from Neckarbsisschofsheim in South Germany, but was living in Dortmund when she married Harry. Like his father and brothers, Harry was involved in the cattle trade and also kept cattle himself. Julchen opened a fashion store in 1933 in the building where they lived, Markt 14, on the corner of Niersstraat. Their daughter Selly was born in 1932 and a second girl, Hannelore, in 1937, but she died after a month and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Gennep.

Kessenich, 29 May 1880 – Sobibor, 16 July 1943. Reached the age of 63 years.

Samuel Andriesse and Johanna Jesse married in 1914 in Lank. They were the parents of Hedwig.

Lank, 8 June 1916 – Midden-Europa, 30 April 1943.  Reached the age of 26 years. Occupation: Sales representative.

Lank, 29 May 1918 – Auschwitz, 31 August 1942. Reached the age of 24 years. Occupation: Factory worker, worked for Gentricot.

Here Hedwig Kölling-Hirschberg lived with her non-Jewish husband Josef Kölling. Son Bernd lived in the Niersstraat in Gennep. Hedwig was not deported in the first instance, but was arrested by the police because of the violation of the "Abendsperre" and deported via the Oranjehotel in Scheveningen, via via to Auschwitz. Her husband Joseph was also arrested and spent 1.5 years in Dachau.

Horssen, 4 November 1872 – Sobibor, 14 May 1943.  Reached the age of 70 years.

Goch, 11 January 1919 – Auschwitz, 18 October 1944. Reached the age of 25 years.

The couple Arthur and Ellen van Leeuwen-Hoffmann from Gennep decided to flee the Netherlands and find a safe haven in the lion's den: Germany. They left for Berlin with a false identity card. Ellen managed to find a hiding place there, but was arrested and murdered in Auschwitz. Arthur survived the war, working under an assumed name as a truck driver in Germany.

Gennep, 14 August 1890 – Sobibor, 16 July 1943.  Reached the age of 52 years. Occupation: Butcher.

On April 9, 1943 Jacob had to go to camp Vught. He worked on the Moerdijk until 2 July 1943. Then he had to go to Westerbork. From there he went to Sobibor on 13 July, where he was gassed immediately after his arrival on 16 July 1943.

Opsterland, 27 May 1894 – Sobibor, 11 June 1943.  Reached the age of 49 years.

Henriëtte married Andreas Sanders in 1921. They are going to live in Amsterdam. After a short illness Andreas dies in 1924. They have no children. She returns to her parents in Leeuwarden.  Henriette remarries in 1928 with Jacob Kaufman and moves to Gennep in Limburg.
