Plaatsen waar een goeie 100 jaar geleden gesneuvelden lagen begraven, waar gewonden werden verzorgd of waar tramsporen liepen om de soldaten te bevoorraden. 24 works of art spread across the Westhoek bring missing traces from the First World War back to life. Places where those who died more than 100 years ago were buried, where the wounded were cared for or where tram tracks ran to supply the soldiers. “Soins par nécessité” - Kunstenaarscollectief Natural Living, Fer-Unique en Philou - art of shaping wood

Hier bevond zich het oude veldhospitaal dat gedurende de Eerste Wereldoorlog een plaats van hoop was. Hoop om terug de oude te worden, hoop om de hel die er heerste te kunnen ontvluchten, hoop op overleven. De getorste stalen buizen symboliseren de last op de schouders van het medisch personeel, die ontelbare gewonden hebben geholpen in deze donkere tijden. De bol in de kern van het werk staat voor de zorg van onze medemens. Het zwevende zeil uit wilgen geeft het gevoel van een tentenkamp weer.

Here was the old field hospital that was a place of hope during the First World War. Hope to get back to normal, hope to escape the hell that was there, hope to survive. The twisted steel pipes symbolize the burden on the shoulders of the medical staff, who have helped countless injured people in these dark times. The sphere at the core of the work represents the care of our fellow man. The floating sail made of willows gives the feeling of a tent camp.

“Black Sativa” - Robin Uzeel

Black Sativa is meer dan een sculptuur. Het is een spiritueel symbool dat ons eraan herinnert dat het leven een cirkel is die begint bij de geboorte en eindigt bij de dood, een cirkel van gebeurtenissen die alle ellende veroorzaakt, maar uiteindelijk leidt tot vreugde.

Black Sativa is more than a sculpture. It is a spiritual symbol that reminds us that life is a circle that begins at birth and ends at death, a circle of events that causes all misery, but ultimately leads to joy.

Hier vormt het prachtige uitzicht op het landschap de basis voor deze installatie. De horizonlijn wordt versterkt met deze organische structuur. Deze installatie is volledig gemaakt uit levende wilgentakken die samen worden gevlochten tot een natuurlijke vorm. De komende jaren zal het kunstwerk groeien en veranderen van vorm. De golvende beweging staat voor de emoties en gevoelens tijdens de turbulente periode van oorlogsvoering.

Here the beautiful view of the landscape forms the basis for this installation. The horizon line is reinforced with this organic structure. This installation is made entirely from living willow branches that are braided together into a natural shape. In the coming years the work of art will grow and change shape. The wavy movement represents the emotions and feelings during the turbulent period of warfare.

Het kunstwerk geeft een stukgeschoten verdedigingslinie weer. Wanneer het zonlicht de ster in het midden doet oplichten, herdenken wij de vele dappere soldaten die hun leven gaven voor onze hedendaagse samenleving. De levende wilgen die het werk insluiten staan voor het ontstaan van nieuw leven na totale verwoesting.

The artwork depicts a destroyed defense line. When the sunlight lights up the star in the center, we commemorate the many brave soldiers who gave their lives for our contemporary society. The living willows that enclose the work represent the emergence of new life after total destruction.

“L’équilibre perturbé” - Kunstenaarscollectief Natural Living, Fer-Unique en Philou - art of shaping wood

Een trompe l'oeil die door middel van het perspectief in het werk de illusie wekt van een piramide en die symbool staat voor de massa mensen die er het leven lieten. Ook kan het de hiërarchie voorstellen van de verschillende rangen in het leger. De vele soldaten onderaan krijgen de zwaarste klappen te verduren, terwijl de enkelingen bovenaan ongeschonden uit de gevechten komen. De vorm wijst recht naar de hemel.

A trompe l'oeil that, through the perspective in the work, creates the illusion of a pyramid and symbolizes the mass of people who lost their lives there. It can also represent the hierarchy of the different ranks in the army. The many soldiers at the bottom suffer the heaviest blows, while the few at the top emerge unscathed from the fighting. The shape points straight to the sky.

“Mystic Press” - Klaas Bullynck

Mystic Press is een antieke boekenpers die symbool staat voor menselijke wijsheid. Op de pers ligt geen boek maar een zinken trechter, als symbool voor waanzin. Een trechter geraakt nooit vol. Krankzinnigen worden traditioneel voorgesteld met een omgekeerde trechter als hoofddeksel.

Mystic Press is an ancient book press that symbolizes human wisdom. There is no book on the press, but a zinc funnel, as a symbol of madness. A funnel never gets full. Insane people are traditionally depicted wearing an inverted funnel as a headgear.

Het kunstwerk is een abstracte weergave van het oorspronkelijk verdwenen monument ter herdenking van de Franse soldaten van het 6de territoriale regiment. Het regiment speelde een grote rol in de verdediging van onze streek.

The artwork is an abstract representation of the originally disappeared monument commemorating the French soldiers of the 6th territorial regiment. The regiment played a major role in the defense of our region.

Kortemark (Handzame): Begraafplaats Edewallestraat (tussen huisnummer 44 en 46)

De handgemaakte poppies staan voor het nieuwe leven dat ontspruit. De berk is volgens de Keltische cultuur de boom van het nieuwe begin. Met haar wortels raakt ze de aarde heel oppervlakkig aan en richt ze zich voornamelijk op de hemel. De wilgen die uit de berk afdalen en langzaam het hele monument omarmen, staan symbool voor de connectie tussen het fysieke en de hedendaagse wereld en het hiernamaals, de gevallen soldaten.

The handmade poppies represent the new life that is sprouting. According to Celtic culture, the birch is the tree of new beginnings. With its roots it touches the earth very superficially and focuses mainly on the sky. The willows that descend from the birch and slowly embrace the entire monument symbolize the connection between the physical and the contemporary world and the afterlife, the fallen soldiers.

Dit werk is gebaseerd op de legende van Georges Guynemer. De legende vertelt dat deze Franse oorlogsheld na een zware strijd opstijgt tot in de wolken, waar hij voor eeuwig zal blijven. Op deze manier wordt hij door de bevolking ontsterfelijk gemaakt. De realiteit vertelt jammer genoeg een ander verhaal over deze gevallen held.

This work is based on the legend of Georges Guynemer. Legend has it that after a tough battle, this French war hero ascended into the clouds, where he would remain forever. In this way he is immortalized by the population. Unfortunately, reality tells a different story about this fallen hero.

Paradise Lost is het silhouet van het Christusbeeld dat op deze Belgische militaire begraafplaats stond tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Voor de militairen speelde geloof een hoofdrol.

Paradise Lost is the silhouette of the Christ statue that stood on this Belgian military cemetery during the First World War. Faith played a key role for the soldiers.

Mesen: Daalstraat, op het einde van de trage weg bij de picknickplaats

“Tommy” - Benjamin Gardin

Tommy ontleent zijn naam aan zijn Britse afkomst en vertegenwoordigt hiermee twee verschillende betekenissen: enerzijds als duiding voor de gesneuvelde soldaten, anderzijds zorgt het werk voor een duidelijk landschapsbaken. Het werk dankt zijn naam aan de bijnaam voor Britse soldaten, Tommies.

Nieuwpoort: Westfront, Kustweg 2

“Vluchtend Paard” - Klaas Bullynck

Het werk Vluchtend Paard vertrekt vanuit de herinnering aan de meer dan zeven miljoen gesneuvelde paarden uit WO I. Deze gevoelige dieren, die doorheen het oeuvre van de kunstenaar steeds terugkomen, vertolken de emotie van de oorlog. Ze zijn een barometer van menselijke gevoelens. Hun lijden haalt ons uit onze comfortzone. Op die manier is het lijdende paard het tegenovergestelde van een 'verlosser'. Het zijn lastdieren of trekdieren die de geschiedenis meesleuren.

The work Fleeing Horse starts from the memory of the more than seven million horses killed in WWI. These sensitive animals, which keep recurring throughout the artist's oeuvre, express the emotion of the war. They are a barometer of human feelings. Their suffering takes us out of our comfort zone. In this way, the suffering horse is the opposite of a 'savior'. They are pack animals or draft animals that drag history along with them.

“Mose Egetrae” - Robin Uzeel

Het beeld Mose Egetrae, een Moeraseik die duizenden jaren onder de grond heeft gelegen, roept verschillende beelden op bij degene die ernaar kijkt. Het kan herinneringen oproepen aan de vele soldaten die in massagraven werden begraven, als een stapel onder de grond. Maar evenzeer lijkt het op de schedel van een paard en verwijst het naar de vele paarden die worden ingezet voor het verplaatsen van kanonnen en proviand en uiteindelijk in dezelfde massagraven terecht komen als hun menselijke medesoldaten.

The statue Mose Egetrae, a pin oak that has been underground for thousands of years, conjures up different images for those who look at it. It may bring back memories of the many soldiers who were buried in mass graves, like a pile underground. But it also resembles the skull of a horse and refers to the many horses that are used to move cannons and supplies and ultimately end up in the same mass graves as their human fellow soldiers.

Poperinge (Roesbrugge): Bergenstraat, bereikbaar via paadje naast huisnummer 2

Het kunstwerk is een vergrote weergave van een ensemble zaaddozen van de bekende klaproos. De klaproos, ook wel papaver genoemd, staat symbool voor troost en dodenherdenking. De bloem dankt deze symboliek aan de slagvelden in Vlaanderen tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog die rood kleurden van de klaprozen.

The artwork is an enlarged representation of an ensemble of seed pods of the famous poppy. The poppy, also called poppy, symbolizes comfort and remembrance of the dead. The flower owes this symbolism to the battlefields in Flanders during the First World War, which turned red with poppies.

Het symbolische monument in Staden herinnert ons aan de vele jonge soldaten die hun leven hebben gegeven voor een lapje grond tijdens de oorlog. Dit kunstwerk is een eerbetoon aan hun kracht en energie, die ze hebben opgeofferd voor de bevrijding en vrede van ons land.

The symbolic monument in Staden reminds us of the many young soldiers who gave their lives for a piece of land during the war. This work of art is a tribute to their strength and energy, which they sacrificed for the liberation and peace of our country.

Veurne (Vinkem): picknickplaats in Sikkelstraat, nabij huisnummer 8

“Chemin de fer” - Kunstenaarscollectief Natural Living, Fer-Unique en Philou – art of shaping wood

Met dit werk brengen de kunstenaars een representatie van de oude tramverbinding Veurne-Poperinge. De onzichtbare spoorweg zou vele verhalen kunnen vertellen over wat er hier destijds plaatsvond. De bol representeert de wereld rond transport en het belang ervan om hoognodige goederen te leveren zoals levensmiddelen, kanonnen en munitie. Het spoor, verstrengeld door wilgen en vloeiend door het landschap, vormt een onmisbaar element tijdens de oorlog die hoop bracht voor velen.

With this work the artists present a representation of the old tram connection Veurne-Poperinge. The invisible railway could tell many stories about what took place here at the time. The sphere represents global transportation and its importance in delivering much-needed goods such as food, cannons and ammunition. The railway, entwined by willows and flowing through the landscape, is an indispensable element during the war that brought hope to many.

“Wings of Jesus” - Robin Uzeel

Het beeld is gemaakt uit een eeuwenoude Christusdoorn. Dat is dezelfde boom waarvan vroeger de doornkroon werd gemaakt voor Jezus Christus' lijdensweg.

The statue is made from an ancient honey locust tree. That is the same tree from which the crown of thorns used to be made for Jesus Christ's agony.

Wervik (Terhand): Hoek Magerheidstraat 88 x Kampstraat

“Himmel!” - Klaas Bullynck

Himmel! is gebaseerd op een oude ansichtkaart die de Duitse bezetter drukte tijdens WO I en die aan de soldaten werd aangeboden om naar het thuisfront te versturen. Deze Kriegserinnerungskarte kreeg het opschrift 'Vijandelijke vliegenier in zicht'. Op de kaart staan Duitse soldaten die in de kern van Terhand staan en die naar boven staren om een vijandelijk vliegtuig te spotten.

Himmel! is based on an old postcard that the German occupiers printed during WWI and that was offered to the soldiers to send to the home front. This Kriegserinnerungskarte was labeled 'Enemy airman in sight'. The map shows German soldiers standing in the center of Terhand and looking up to spot an enemy plane.

Zonnebeke (Beselare): grasveld bij OC De Leege Platse, Geluwestraat, nabij huisnummer 10

“Battle scars” - Kunstenaarscollectief Natural Living, Fer-Unique en Philou – art of shaping wood

Vanuit de gesculpteerde sokkel komen twee aftakkingen tevoorschijn die samen gesmeed zijn. Daartussen zien we meer in detail het vernielde landschap. Gesneuvelde soldaten, de hospitaalkerk, bommenkraters, kortom de littekens van deze periode. Dit kunstwerk is een voorstelling van het verscheurde landschap in deze regio. Het resultaat na enige jaren van oorlog en leed.

Two branches emerge from the sculpted base that have been forged together. In between we see the destroyed landscape in more detail. Fallen soldiers, the hospital church, bomb craters, in short, the scars of this period. This work of art is a representation of the torn landscape in this region. The result after several years of war and suffering.

“Yggdrasil” - Robin Uzeel

Yggdrasil is een beeld gemaakt uit een Moeraseik die ongeveer 3.500 jaar in de Westhoek onder de grond lag. Op diezelfde grond speelde de oorlog zich af. In diezelfde grond werden gesneuvelde soldaten begraven.

Yggdrasil is a statue made from a pin oak that lay underground in the Westhoek for about 3,500 years. The war took place on that same ground. Fallen soldiers were buried in the same ground.
