Every year in May, the Commemoration Committee of the Execution Sites of Rieme and Oostakker, in collaboration with the City of Ghent, organizes a memorial ceremony at the execution site in Oostakker.

The execution site in Oostakker is the place where 66 resistance fighters were executed by the German occupiers during World War II. On October 24, 1944, the City of Ghent ordered the excavations, identifying the bodies that had been secretly executed there.  This location also commemorates 20 resistance fighters who died at the execution site of Rieme. Due to the construction of the Kluizendok of the port of Ghent, this site had to disappear in 1998.
