On the 27th August, 1914, Etreux was the scene of the Rearguard Affair of Etreux, in which the 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers were overwhelmed, after a long resistance, by nine German battalions.
There are 10 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-18 war commemorated in this site, 1 of which is unidentified.
