On September 5, 1944, eight members of the Secret Army were killed there in a fateful encounter with some German soldiers. Later that day, another member of the resistance movement was killed.

At the bottom of the monument are also the names of all resistance fighters of the Secret Army Sector Sint-Niklaas who died in a concentration camp, went missing or were shot. Also the name of one civilian victim.
