Flying Officer Mervyn Wheatley flies in this modified Spitfire over Germany to take aerial photos. The Spitfire was only equipped with 2 cameras so that the aircraft could fly higher. However, on the Dutch-German border, the Spitfire was intercepted by a German Messerschmitt Me109 fighter aircraft. The plane crashes near Herwen, but the body of the Flying Officer ends up at Düffelward in Germany. There Mervyn Wheatley is buried with full German military honors.
