Deurne Districthuis - Expo Georges Despaux
An expo from drawings from Buchenwald concentration camp.
On April 11, 1945 at 3.15 pm the concentration camp of Buchenwald was liberated by the Americans. At the same time, seventy seven years later, the District Hall is showing drawings by Georges Despaux who portrayed his fellow prisoners in the 'death camp' in Buchenwald.
“Despaux drew with pencil on bad paper and with the danger of being told off,” says Rik Vanmolkot, Hendrik's son, who went in search of the people behind the people portrayed. "The SS sometimes commissioned artists to portray their wives, for example, but Despaux certainly also worked clandestinely."
