Genk Monument Andre Dumont
André Dumont Monument
This monument is dedicated to the Leuven professor André Dumont. He discovered the first coal in Limburg in the night of 1 to 2 August 1901, namely in As. This was the start of the industrialization and growth of Limburg. From a region consisting of heathland areas and small farms, this part of Limburg has grown into a dynamic, multicultural region. Today, André Dumont's influence is still noticeable: hospitals and schools were named after him.
The Genk monument was erected in 1951 and it consists of a square of stones, on which a number of groups of statues were depicted in relief by Harry Elström. The central relief depicts André Dumont with a lump of coal in his hand. He is flanked by a farmer carrying a derrick and a miner carrying a mining lamp.
