On August 18, 1944, seven residents of Wetteren were arrested by the German occupiers on suspicion of membership of the resistance and acts of sabotage. They were taken away and never returned.

To mark the 75th anniversary of that event on August 18, 2019, seven commemorative stones were created. Seven stepping stones, made from the tombstone of armed resistance Gomar De Gussem, father-in-law of alderman Lieve De Gelder.
