HEYLIGEN Alfons, Breendonk 11 April 1944 one of the 24 Partizans that were killed in Fort Breendonk on 11 April 1944.
Alfons Heyligen, born in Korspel in 1923, is the brother of courier Anna Heyligen. At the beginning of 1943, he was recruited into the partisans by August Convens, with his main assignment being sabotage, but he also took part in liquidations. On November 15, 1943, Heyligen was injured during a raid on the Korspel football field. He himself is able to escape, but his partner Albert Huybrechts is killed. He goes into hiding at the Beliën farm in Heusden, where he recovers from his wounds. He has not yet fully recovered when the farm is robbed. The Kriegsgericht sentenced him to death on March 24 for six murders and for his role in a railway sabotage near Mol.
