Roeselare German Bunker

In the Sint-Hubrechtsstraat, near number 51, there is a German bunker from the Second World War.  Two canvases by artist Michal Czerko were hung at this Bunker in December 2021 to commemorate resistance heroine Simonne Brugghe and General Maczek.

Information (Wikipedia)

Simonne Elodia Brugghe (Roeselare, December 16, 1922 - Narangba (Australia), July 27, 1987) was a Flemish-Belgian school teacher, resistance fighter and soldier (last in Polish service).  She came into contact with the resistance through her parents. On September 2, 1944, she and her father encountered a group of Polish officers. During this meeting, Simonne received her first assignment: to check information about the German defenses in Roeselare. She was also asked to collect precise information about the numbers and arms strength of the Germans. With a ruse she was able to gather the necessary information. The city of Roeselare was liberated on September 8 by the Polish armies of General Stanisław Maczek.

On September 11, 1944, Simonne Brugghe was appointed by the council of aldermen as an interim teacher in the primary department of the Stadsmeisjesschool in Roeselare. A little later, on December 12, 1944, Simonne received the Cross of Bravery, presented by the Polish General Maczek, during a military parade on the Grote Markt in Roeselare. This was not welcomed by everyone in Roeselare and hindered her career in urban education.  Simonne Brugghe submitted her resignation in March 1945 and joined the Polish army, which, in contrast to the Belgian army, did admit women. She enlisted in the "YMCA" branch of the Polish Liberation Army. She was appointed liaison officer in the Welfare and would remain so until the Polish division left after the war. She spent the first months of her time in the army learning Polish. Later, as a liaison officer, she organized material support for the people who were liberated from concentration camps. She was responsible for the supply of clothing and material. To transport all this, she had a truck with a driver. After the demobilization of the Polish army, Simonne resigned.

On the 7th May 2023 a "Blue Plaque" was unveiled in honour of Simonne Brugghe.  It is a the corner of Iepersestraat - Lindenstraat in Roeselare.
