Eversten Ringpfeilerhalle

The four memorial plaques inside the Ringpfeilerhalle list a total of 244 fallen soldiers from the First World War, who came from the districts of Eversten I to IV, Hundsmühlen, Nord- and Südmoslesfehn. The first two memorial plaques were restored by the city in 2019 because the names listed here had become illegible due to weather conditions. The other two will follow in 2020.

In the center of the Ringpfeilerhalle stands a sandstone sculpture by the Oldenburg sculptor Max Gökes. The originally gilded sculpture, a symbol of the Eternal Flame, stood there until 1953. Then it was removed and remained unnoticed in the bushes behind the memorial. In place of the sculpture, a large sandstone cross was erected on the initiative of the Everster Citizens' Association. It bears the inscription "To the victims of the world wars 1914-18 to 1939-45. Her death was the greatest act of her life” – words that can no longer be reconciled with our knowledge of the two world wars.

Since 2007, the cross and the eternal flame have stood together in the Ringpfeilerhalle as an expression of a completely different understanding of history.
