7193 German war dead from the First World War
The German military cemetery Montaigu I was laid out by the German troops during the war. It took mainly fallen soldiers from the eastern section of the Chemin-des-Dames. After the end of the war, the French military authorities expanded the cemetery by adding beds to the German dead from the area of 60 communities and districts, including Mauregny (over 1000 prisoners), Concy-les-Eppes (over 500 prisoners), Berrieux (600 prisoners) and others Victim of the fierce fighting for possession of the Chemin-des-Dames, which like a locking bolt withstood the Allied attacks from autumn 1914 to spring 1915 and in April / May 1917. The German attack at the end of May 1918 and the defensive battles from September to October 1918 again resulted in high losses.
Those resting in Montaigu I belonged to troops whose home bases were in almost all countries and provinces of the former German Empire. Troops from Brandenburg, Mecklenburg, Schleswig-Holstein, West Prussia and Württemberg were the main participants in the fighting in 1918.
