Kortemark SS Camp

Camp Markhove, like Camp Proven, was a sub-work camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp, in the province of West Flanders in Belgium during World War II. Camp Markhove functioned from 28 July to 2 September 1944 as a concentration camp for political prisoners and forced labour.

Camp Markhove was located in the Ichtegemstraat near house number 96, in the hamlet of Markhove, in the municipality of Kortemark. The camp consists of a mansion and school buildings of the Catholic primary school. The mansion was used by the officers of the SS-Baubrigade I. The political prisoners were housed in the Markhove school surrounded by barbed wire. The school buildings were demolished in 1987. The mansion is still intact in 2023.
