On 6 october 1942 McCluskey was the gunner of a Halifax II bomber W7763. It took off from airfield Topcliffe at 1854 hrs for a bombing mission on Osnabruck.
The Halifax was shot down by a nightfighter and crashed at 2355 hrs in the estate of Prattenburg between Veenendaal and Rhenen. McCluskey's parachute failed deploy and he drowned in the River Rhine. The rest of the crew was taken prisoner.
