Breuna Russian-Polnish War Cemetery

Info: Volksbund

There are two war cemeteries just outside the municipality of Breuna. 490 German and 145 foreign war dead from Poland and the Soviet Union were buried here separately. They were mainly soldiers who died in battle, in hospitals or as prisoners of war. At the beginning of the 1950s, the Volksbund expanded the grave fields originally created by the American Graves Service with the help of Boy Scout groups. In 1951, both war cemeteries were inaugurated and handed over to the care of the municipality of Breuna.

According to the grave list, only 13 Soviet and one Polish citizen are known by name. The majority of the buried dead were registered with an X and a consecutive number when the American graves service recorded the graves.

Their gravestones are now marked with the inscription "Unknown". However, the identification tags available make it clear that many of the unknown dead were recorded in the prisoner of war camp 326 (VI K) Senne. Mainly Soviet prisoners of war were held there. At the end of the 1960s, further graves of Polish and Soviet war dead known by name were transferred from Ersorde and Volkmarsen. Contrary to the information on the memorial stone, the total number of foreign dead is now 145 people.
