Arlon Chasseurs Ardennais Monument
Memorial for the Chasseurs Ardennais
The name first surfaced on November 8, 1934. Their uniform consisted of a green cap with wild boar insignia, resembling that of the French Alpine hunters at the top and that of the cavalry at the bottom. The motto was unmistakable: “Résiste et mord”.
The new unit, with Arlon garrisons in Bastogne and Vielsalm, had to provide efficient defence on the border, as planned, relying on 375 small bunkers of the “Devèze line”, in collaboration with the French army.
At the start of World War II and the mobilization of the Belgian army, a second division of the Ardennes Hunters was set up under the leadership of General François Ley. The two divisions together formed the Ardeense Jagers corps.
