Corporal John William Harper, died on September 29, 1944, was killed in the liberation of Merksplas-Colony.  For his heroic behavior he received posthumously the Victoria Cross. Both at the cemetery in Hatfield, the birthplace and residence of Harper, and in Merksplas near the place where he was killed, a memorial monument was erected.
