Private TURNER, JAMES - Service Number 6899 - 23rd Bn. Australian Infantry, A.I.F.

Died 05/02/1918 Aged 23

Son of Mrs. Emily Turner, of 99, Cremorne St., South Richmond, Victoria, Australia. Born at Ballarat, Victoria.

 

Private Turner was accidentally killed during musketry practise, shot through the eye, on the morning of the 5th February when, by mistake, live ammo was used instead of dummy cartridges.  According to an eye witness: “The Cpl was showing him how to use the eye disc for aiming.  Turner fixed the disc in his eye as told, the Cpl fired, by mistake it was a live round,”

His comrades of A Co 23rd Battalion subscribed and a headstone of Belgian granite was erected.
