Historical Information (Source: CWGC)
There are now a small number of 1939-1945 War casualties commemorated in this site. The Commonwealth war graves are in the north-western corner of the cemetery.
On October 8 1943 the Britsh Lancaster JB181 MG-V was homeward-bound after a mission to Hannover. The plane belonged to 7 Squadron Bomber Command and was piloted by Bruce MacPherson. JB181 spearheaded the attack wave and was pathfinder assigned to illuminate the target for the other bombers. The plane was attacked by a German night fighter flown by Feldwebel Heinz Vinke.
Above the small village of Westervelde the plane exploded and crashed. Four bodies were retrieved from the wreckage and three remain missing.
