Gennep Monument "De Barmhartige Samaritaan"

Historical Information

“The Good Samaritan” is a war memorial in Gennep. The monument was designed by sculptor Jac Maris and commemorates fifty-four local resistance war victims: two officers, three soldiers, four resistance fighters, twenty-four internees and twenty-one civilians.

It is a bronze statue of a man on a horse carrying a wounded warrior on his lap. Below the statue is another frieze on which small figures are depicted to represent victims. The statue is three meters high and stands on a brick pedestal. In the pedestal is a piece of parchment with the names of the fifty-four war victims. On the pedestal is a text by Anton van Dunkirk: "The life they gave for freedom forbids us to live as fearful slaves."

The statue is placed next to the Niersbrug so that everyone who enters Gennep sees it. The square on which the monument stands has been called Vrijheidsplein since 2009. Here are lists of names of fallen soldiers of the 51 Highland Division. Next to the monument is a special memorial for fallen soldiers in the Indonesian War of Independence. The Niers Bridge was renamed Highlander Bridge in 2015. The monument is also part of the Liberation Route and has a so-called "listening key" with information about the capture of Gennep.
