Herbesthal (Lontzen) Jewish Children Monument
History Information
Monument in memory of Jewish minors who were deported to Belgium between 1938-1939. These transports passed through Herbesthal station and 750 Jewish children under the age of 14 were rescued. Most of the children were transported to Great Britain.
The Belgian government was initially reluctant and the first shipments were sent back to Germany. There was great indignation from the population and criticism from the press, causing the government to reverse its decision.
