Marcinelle TIR National
(Source: wikipedia)
Built in 1875, the Tir de Marcinelle was intended to accommodate the shooting exercises of soldiers from the Trésignies barracks, which cannot be practiced in an urban environment.
The police and gendarmes from Charleroi and Marcinelle also came to practice. The site became the property of the National Defense in 1921.
During World War II, the site was requisitioned by the Nazis and became a place of execution. About 50 people were killed there.
Major Servais, Commandant Massart and Lieutenant Evrard lost their lives. The dungeon as well as the execution post are still visible today.
The shooting becomes a place of memory after the war. In 1946 a plaque was affixed to the entrance. In 2015, frescoes were made by young people evoking the history of the place.
