Lager XII - Dalum

Geeste-Dalum Sowjetischer Kriegsgräberfriedhof (info: Volksbund)

At the entrance to the largest war cemetery in Emsland, next to the gate, there is an inscription carved in stone: "Russian Military Cemetery Dalum" and on a bronze plaque behind the entrance: "Soviet prisoners of war whose names are unknown rest here in mass graves. Their number is estimated at 8,000 to 16,000."  Only 37 Russians, one Russian woman and one Italian, buried in individual graves are known by name, and nine prisoners of war buried in individual graves are unknown.  After the end of the war, some were reburied here or in the Catholic cemetery in Meppen.

Over a certain period of time or in individual cases, in addition to the dead from the Dalum camp, Soviet prisoners of war from the Wietmarschen, Alexisdorf, Bathorn and Groß Hesepe camps were also buried in this cemetery.
