Schiplaken, Belgium - Remembrance Battle of Schiplaken 18 August 2024
The Battle of Schiplaken in 1914
The monument in Schiplaken was inaugurated on 20 August 1920, barely six years after the Battle. In an attempt to slow down the rapidly advancing German troops, fierce battles were fought in and around Schiplaken from 20 August to 12 September 1914. The poorly armed and poorly organised Belgian army eventually had to retreat, leaving behind approximately 100 dead. Of these, 90 are buried in the cemetery of Schiplaken.
In the centre of the monument is a mourning mother with a fallen Belgian soldier at her feet. The 90 fallen soldiers are buried under a simple gravestone. The symmetrically constructed monument is marked on either side by two female figures with hands in front of their chests.
