Broekom Monument
Monument to war victims and more specifically to Jean Moers, who fell on May 30, 1940 near Willemstad in the Netherlands.
The monument was erected for the victims from Broekom during the transport of prisoners of war to Germany at the start of the Second World War. Most of the victims were soldiers who were captured on May 28 in the vicinity of Ghent and transferred to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen where they were taken by four ships to a German prisoner of war camp (via the Waal to the Rhine). On May 30, 1940, the "Rhenus 127" struck a German magnetic mine near Willemstad, causing the ship to sink. At least 134 Belgians would die during this shipwreck. The victims are commemorated in Willemstad at the "Belgian military cemetery of honor 1940" (inaugurated on April 14, 1950). Jean Moers was also on this ship and is commemorated in this military cemetery. His name can be found among those of the victims.
