Leopoldsburg Treurgracht

"Treurgracht"

September 4, 1944, the last Germans leave Leopoldsburg. The 900 political prisoners still in the camp at that time are released. A number of them went straight to Brasserie Leopold where they were offered another meal. When this came to the ears of the Flemish SS soldiers and some German soldiers, they raided the brasserie and dragged a number of men to the other side of the railway. They were forced to dig their own graves and then be shot. A number of men, the number of which is not clear, escaped death. Presumably they dropped a second before the fatal shot.

22 innocent men were murdered in cold blood. The small moat, 22 crosses and a funerary monument refer to this horrific fact and this place was given the name "the Monument of the Treurgracht", also called "Dodengracht".
